Yeast Detox Fail!

Ok, so here’s the deal. I had finished writing up my post for today & then went to look for a picture to show a tongue of a person with yeast overgrowth, since that is an easy way to tell if you have a yeast issue. I found a picture, clicked on it to save & use, & then “Why The Yeast Detox Diet Won’t Work” caught my eye. It was the article that went along with the picture.

My heart sank as I read the article. Everything I am doing is wrong. Potatoes are bad, beans are bad, peas are bad, ripe fruit is OK, butter is OK, on & on & on.  “Nothing will work until you fix the walls of your digestive tract.” Do you know how long that will take? Two years. TWO! Two years of not eating sugar, dairy (cheese!), any grains, most veggies, most fruits & alcohol.

I could handle the two weeks. But this gal can’t do two years without cheese, chocolate & wine. Nah-uh!! I know, I know…but sjb, you’ve got that debilitating rash. Don’t remind me. It’s the only symptom I have left of the EBV & yes, it drives me insane. That is why I am not giving up completely.

I do need to regroup, do some more research. Way more in-depth research, is what I should say. So don’t give up on me yet. I am going to do this, but I have to find a way to do it that works for me. I know my strengths & weaknesses, so I will fine tailor a plan for myself & I will chronicle it here. I promise!

While I am formulating that plan, I will continue to be the guinea pig for you & keep trying some of the homemade health & beauty product recipes I’ve been collecting. I’m waiting on an order of essential oils to get here & then I’ll be off & running making lip balms, shampoos, conditioners & wall plug ins!! 🙂

Yeast & Sugar Free, Day 4

Merry Christmas! I can’t believe it is snowing & blowing outside right now. Mother Nature is MAD today!!

I am now on day 4 of my yeast & sugar detox. Physically I am still feeling really good. None of the nasty side affects have taken over me. I think because my main symptom was body rash, THAT is what has decided to plague me until my body is flushed of it’s toxins. Yesterday was unreal in the itch department. My earlobes even broke out at one point. I went clear until 4pm before I took a Benadryl to stop the itching. I really didn’t want to put a chemical into my body, but I just couldn’t handle it anymore.

The itching does a real mental job on me. I get cranky & worn out. So by the end of the day I was ready to just fall into a heap in my bed. Which is pretty much what I did. I woke up this morning feeling much better. No itching so far & I think the extra sleep did me good. 😉

My Meals for Today:

Breakfast: Oatmeal & eggs. I was craving an egg really bad, so I made 2 over easy eggs & plopped them right on-top of my oatmeal. Sounds bizarre but it was a yummy combination!!

Lunch: Left over cube steak & sweet potatoes. I was supposed to make mashed potatoes last night, but was to exhausted to stand at the stove & mash, so I subbed in the sweet potatoes.

Supper: Roasted Chicken & sautéed green beans. This is one of my favorite meals, so I’m looking forward to it!

Snacks: Celery sticks “frosted” (makes me feel like I’m getting a treat to say “frosted”) with peanut butter & a rice cake for later on if I’m still snacky.

Last night I fell asleep with my make-up on. Hate when I do that, but it did prove to me that the oil cleansing is so awesome. Like I didn’t know already, right? Anyway, while I was in the shower this morning, I cleaned my face with the over the counter junk that was in there just because it was handy. When I got out, my face instantly felt dry & taunt…& not taunt in a good way! So I had to slather on the heavy moisturizer & today my face just feels gross! I will never use that stuff again & I will be making sure my girls don’t either!! I may go as far as dumping it out & putting my oil mixture into it’s container!! Wasting a little money, but I’ll be recycling the container, so it all evens out, right?

As promised, here is my grocery list for week #1 of going Yeast Free!!


2 Flank Steaks (also known as flat iron steaks)

Pepper Steak with brown rice & green beans

Hamburgers (no buns) & sweet potatoes

Roast Turkey Breasts, mashed potatoes, gravy

Fajitas & potato wedges

Baked Chicken, veggie medley, brown rice & gravy

Minute Steak, mashed potatoes & gravy

My Lunches:

Chicken Salad

Egg Salad

Tuna Salad

Lettuce Salad

*Do you see a theme here? ::sigh:: They will all be made with a special dressing that does not include mayo or miracle whip. ::great big sigh::

I’m sorry I cannot share with you the exact recipes. I got my recipes from Whitney Frazier at She was very sweet & gave me a copy of her cookbook in exchange for me doing this diet & blogging about it! Right now she is offering her new gluten free version of this same cookbook for free to anyone who will try the recipes & give her feedback! That’s a pretty good deal! Follow the link to learn more!

You may have noticed, there is no fruit in this diet. Fruit is good for you, but loaded with natural sugars, so for the next 2 weeks I will have to forget the fruit. MKB will continue to eat fruit because that is his main stay snack at work & he doesn’t have the issues with sugar that I do.

Also, no sodas, no coffee, well, not the kind of coffee I drink which is basically cream & sugar with a splash of coffee, no alcohol ::sigh:: & no chocolate! Oh my word. See what I meant when I said on Facebook there may be (can pretty much guarantee there will be) swearing & crabbiness! So I apologize for all the times I will offend you in the future.

And as far as breakfasts go, I’m not big on breakfast. I’ll have a bowl of cereal or sometimes just a graham cracker. It just depends on how my morning is going. My coffee usually fills me up. But now that I can’t have my normal coffee drink, I will be eating multigrain oatmeal, eggs & yogurt along with some good old fashioned water. Lately I’ve been drinking water with a fresh slice of lemon in it. I read that it will invigorate you even more than a morning cup of coffee. While it does clear the cobwebs & I did not get a caffeine withdrawal headache, a cup ‘o Joe would’ve helped  get me into high gear. Not sure if I can still do that since fruits aren’t allowed? I’ll have to check into that. After all, it’s only 1 slice of lemon, right?

I’m wondering if any of you are going to do this diet with me, or are you going to watch & see if I self implode & then try it for yourself? Either way, thanks for the support! 😉

Going Yeast Free!

Hi ya, Kids! I posted on Facebook that I’d be going yeast free for the next two weeks & asked if you’d be interested in going along for the ride! You all said YEAH!, so here we go!

Why Go Yeast Free?

4 years ago I was diagnosed with Epstein Barr Syndrome. I’ve talked about it a few times on the blog, but I try not to dwell on it. I am very lucky that I do not have a severe case & I function pretty normally & most of the time don’t even realize I have it. It is something that will be with me always, so I try to watch what I eat, go to bed at descent times & TRY to keep stress to a minimum. None of those things are easy, but when you are forced to do something, you don’t have much choice.

Symptoms of EBV are fatigue, brain fog, blurry eye sight, muscle aches & pains, joint pain, etc. Nothing fun, but like I said, I’m lucky that I don’t suffer greatly from most of these symptoms. Sometimes if you talk to me & I look perplexed & can’t find the words I’m looking for, it’s not because I’m a ditzy blonde, it’s because of the EBV. I can deal with the other symptoms pretty well. The one thing I am plagued with & annoys me to NO end is an itchy body rash. I have searched & searched online to see if this is a symptom of EBV. I found that it is, but it is a rare one, therefore, not much is written on how to deal with it. Leave it to me to have a rare symptom of a nasty disease. Oh well, such is my life. It has taken me all 4 years to narrow down where my rash is coming from. I literally JUST found the cause this week!

I have an over growth of yeast in my body.

This is very common in someone with EBV. It is also very common in most Americans. Causes of yeast over growth are:

1. Stress
2.   Use of broad spectrum antibiotics
3.   Hormonal imbalances
– Caused by birth control pills
– Caused by multiple pregnancies
– Caused by hormone therapy for a variety of symptoms
4.  Steroids which weaken several defense mechanisms of our immune system
5.   Frequent and chronic infections
6.  Extensive surgery
7.  Food allergy and malabsorption
8.  Deficiency of micro-nutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, anti-oxidants)
9.  Faulty nutrition, metabolic roller-coaster
10. Substance abuse

I had narrowed down my rash to happening only when I sweat. If I’m nervous & sweat a little, I break out. If I work out & sweat a lot, I break out. It didn’t matter how much I would sweat, the break out would be the same: forearms, thighs, the side of my knees & the back of my neck/shoulder blade area. I typed “skin rash from sweating” into my search engine & up popped Yeast Overgrowth. The yeast is clogging my skin, not allowing it to sweat & cool itself off, so I break out in a rash. A very nasty, itchy rash. Gross, right. Ya, I know.

I had known that limiting my yeast was something that would help me with my EBV, but I wasn’t committed enough to do a full detox to rid my body of it…if you remember I tried it a month ago & lost interest. I mean, come on…no sugar, WINE, grains or dairy. What’s left?? Not much.

But now that I know this is the cause of my rash, I am determined to see it the whole way through. The rash is THAT bad.

I told MKB what I had found out & that I was really going to do it this time & being the sweet guy that he is, he said he’d do it with me. 🙂 He’d like to get in better shape & this really is a great way to get started!

Alright, now you know my why. Tomorrow I will post my grocery list & menu plan for the first week. I’m so sad that I won’t get my nightly glass of red wine, but hopefully this will be the cure I’m looking for & after a while, I can reintroduce wine back into my diet. Please God, let me be able to reintroduce wine back into my diet. I just got a new wine glass. Her name is Big Betty & I love her very much.
